Itinerary

Day 1: Uyuni - Uyuni Salt Flat – Tahua

We begin the Uyuni Salt Flat 5 days tour with pickup from the airport or your hotel in Uyuni. From here, we start our private 4×4 Bolivia desert tour, heading first to the famous Train Cemetery, where abandoned locomotives from the 19th century create a unique and photogenic landscape.

We continue to the village of Colchani, a traditional gateway to the salt flats, where we visit a local salt-processing plant and a small artisan market offering handmade salt crafts—an authentic cultural stop during this Salar de Uyuni expedition.

Entering the vast Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat in the world, we begin an unforgettable journey across its endless white horizon. Along the way, we observe fascinating formations such as salt pyramids, “eyes of the salt” (natural vents), and the first salt hotel, now a museum.

We enjoy a unique lunch in the middle of the salt flats, surrounded by one of the most surreal landscapes on Earth.

In the afternoon, we visit Incahuasi Island, a rocky outcrop covered with giant millenary cacti and fossilized coral. A short hike (approx. 1 hour) takes us to the top, where we are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views—one of the highlights of any Uyuni lagoons and salt flat tour.

As the day comes to an end, we experience a magical sunset in the Salar de Uyuni, accompanied by a special toast with drinks and snacks in the middle of the salt desert.

We then continue to the village of Tahua, located on the slopes of Tunupa Volcano, where we spend the night in a traditional salt hotel, completing an unforgettable first day of this Altiplano adventure Bolivia.

Start Time: 05:30 hrs (sunrise experience) We begin the day very early with a spectacular sunrise in the Salar de Uyuni, one of the most magical moments of the entire Uyuni Salt Flat 5 days tour, as the changing colors reflect across the endless white landscape.

After sunrise, we return to our hotel in Tahua for breakfast and then continue our Bolivia desert tour in a 4×4 vehicle, heading into the remote Altiplano. Along the way, we pass through unique geological formations such as the “Army of Stone”, a surreal collection of rock structures shaped by wind erosion over thousands of years.

We then reach the Chiguana Salt Flat, known for its large borax deposits, before continuing through a valley of petrified lava where the volcanic formations still seem to show movement—an incredible highlight of this Salar de Uyuni expedition.

From here, we enjoy views of the impressive Ollagüe Volcano, one of the few semi-active volcanoes in the region, rising dramatically on the Bolivia–Chile border.

After a scenic drive, we stop for lunch en route before continuing to the stunning Altiplano lagoons, including Cañapa Lagoon and Hedionda Lagoon, famous for their populations of pink flamingos—an essential part of any Uyuni lagoons tour.

In the afternoon, we enter the surreal Siloli Desert, known for its vast, windswept landscapes and unique rock formations. We arrive at our desert lodge, where we will spend the night surrounded by the silence and beauty of the high Andes.

The ascent is demanding due to altitude (5,900+ m), but rewards adventurers with breathtaking panoramic views of the Altiplano and surrounding lagoons.

After reaching the highest point possible (depending on conditions), we descend and return to the refuge. We collect our belongings and continue by vehicle toward Polques, part of the Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna National Reserve.

In the afternoon, you can relax in the Polques Hot Springs, enjoying a well-deserved rest surrounded by spectacular Andean landscapes—one of the most relaxing moments of this Bolivia desert tour.
