Huayna Potosi, one of Bolivia’s most famous peaks, is 6088 meters (19,973 feet) above sea level It is considered by the inhabitants of the city of El Alto (4000 – 4100 m) as their protector and guardian being the most representative mountain of this city and reaching the summit is a real challenge.

On this Climbing Huayna Potosi 3 Days  excursion for beginners, you will learn the ropes during a practice day and tackle the mountain with your guide.Our trip hiiking  included an afternoon of basic mountaineering instruction and a night of acclimatization at the 4700m base camp level, both of which increase your chances of summit success for the Huayna Potosi 6088m climb.

The ascent of Huayna Potosi is the most popular in Bolivia and one of the busiest trails in the Cordillera Real. This impressive massif has been conquered basically on all its faces. The first to reach the summit were 2 Germans, Dients and Lohse, in 1919, after a failed attempt 21 years earlier, when all members of the group perished on the way to the top.

Itinerary

Day 1: La Paz – Base Camping

The tour starts at 09:00. Then we head off to the base camp (4700 m) 1 hour and 45 minutes away from the city of La Paz and around 11:30  then we have lunch. After lunch the hike to the glaciar Viejo (old glacier) begins which takes 2 hrs. There we practice climbing on the ice using all the equipment we have. After 1 hour of practicing we return to the base camp around 16:00. At 18:00 we have dinner and rest in a refuge.

Day 2 Base Camping – Hight Camping

This day starts at 08:00 with breakfast. The free time after breakfast can be used, for example, for a walk. Around 11:30 we have lunch. After 2 hour we climb to the High Camp at 5200 meters. We arrive there after 3 hours and stay in a refuge. Dinner will be at 17:00 and around 18:00 we rest and sleep until midnight.

Day 3 Higth Camping – Huayna Potosi – La Paz

This day starts very early at midnight with breakfast. We start the ascent to the summit of Huayna Potosi at 01:00. Starting at the High Camp we climb the glacier, the path has a slope of 35 – 40 degrees on average and the ascent takes 4 to 7 hours on average. The tourist is attached to the guide with a rope;

the first part is relatively easy until 5500 meters, from this point we climb a wall of 50 meters of length whose inclination is 55 – 60 degrees on average. Once on 5800 meters you get to a plateau and keep walking on an edge which will take you to the summit.

Around 06:30 we arrive at the summit (6088 m) where we can admire all the beauty of the Cordillera Real of the Andes. After 15 minutes we return to the High Camp in 2 hours, pick up the equipment and after we descend to the base camp in 1.5 hours, from where we return to La Paz arriving at 14:00 hours.

The best time to climb Huayna Potosi

The best season to climb Huayna potosí is between May and November, as this is the dry season in Bolivia, and will ensure optimal climbing conditions.

Huayna Potosí – Climbing Route

Most people climb by the Normal Route (the north summit 6088m.) For its access easy. Ascent and descent is by the same route.

From the high camp to the summit, the ascent usually takes between 5 and 6 hours and the descent from the summit to the high camp between 2 and 3 hours.
