Overview

On this trek, you will be amazed by the natural colors of the stunning Rainbow Mountain. You will hike through a beautiful Andean valley and interact with the local people who continue to keep the traditional Quechua culture alive. You will see snow capped peaks, herds of alpaca, and birds of prey, all within this incredibly colorful mountain range. The Rainbow Mountain trek offers opportunities to see a range of wildlife, including soaring eagles and native Caracara falcons.  The colorful sandstone mountains in the Vinicunca area are unique from any other landscape in Peru.

Highlights

In this program we will visit one of the new natural attractions of Cusco “The mountain of 7 colors”. The tour starts early in the morning, we will pick you up at your hotel in Cusco between 04:00 and 04:30 am. To travel by car for approximately two hours to the south, to reach the district of Cusipata – Paucarpata where we can have breakfast, then travel by car for another 1 hour to reach the checkpoint and start the walk, the walk will last approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, we will observe the typical flora and fauna of the Andes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Cusipata – Llacto – Rainbow – Cusco

Our amazing Rainbow Mountain Trek Adventure will begin with pick up from your hotel at 4 a.m. We will begin with a 4-hour drive through the South Valley, on our way to the trailhead at Llacto (4,638m / 15,216 ft).  Along the way, there are breathtaking views of farming Inca terraces, traditional villages, and high Andean peaks.

You will enjoy your breakfast with herds of alpacas and llamas to entertain you in the early morning. After your delicious and healthy breakfast, you will get back in the van for a short  5-minute drive to the start of the trail. Our hike starts by following a lovely stream, with views of the Ausangate Mountain and glaciers. On the way, you will have the opportunity to interact with the local people, who will show you how they continue to live using traditional methods . You will learn about their clothes and the significance of the different hats worn by the men. You can ask your guide to teach you a few phrases in Quechua, the local language – great for connecting with the locals!

After hiking uphill for about 1.5 hours, we will reach our destination: the epic Rainbow Mountain (5,020m /16,466ft). After admiring the unique beauty of this colorful landscape, you will have time to explore the area. You can take pictures and soak up the incredible scenery. We will spend approximately 30 minutes at the summit. Afterwards, there is an optional hike across to the Red Valley.  This extra mini-hike takes about 45 minute to loop back around to the original trail.

When ready, we will hike back down the way we came. The hike down takes 1 hour. Once we arrive, we will enjoy our a well deserved lunch.

After lunch, we will begin our 3-hour drive back to Cusco and drop you off at your hotel, arriving around 5:00pm.

Recommendations:

The weather in the 7 Colors Mountain is cold. Temperatures can reach 0℃ at night. During the day, the sun can wear the visitor out. At the top of the summit, the wind runs strong.
