Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco Andes- (3650m.s.n.m.) Cloud Forest (1,700m.s.n.m.)

We begin our journey early in the morning with pickup from Cusco at 3,300 m.a.s.l., traveling in a comfortable tourist vehicle toward the Amazon basin. The route ascends briefly into the high Andes, reaching elevations of up to 3,650 meters, before descending into the lush cloud forest zone at approximately 1,700 meters above sea level.

During the drive, we pass through spectacular Andean landscapes, deep valleys, and traditional rural communities that reflect the cultural richness of the region. Along the way, we make a stop to visit ancient pre-Inca burial sites (chullpas), offering a glimpse into the history of early Andean civilizations.

We continue to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its preserved architecture and cultural heritage. Here, we visit a local museum to learn more about the traditions, history, and folklore of the area. A packed lunch is provided during the journey as we continue descending through changing ecological zones.

In the afternoon, we enter the famous Peruvian cloud forest, one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in the Andes-Amazon transition. This magical environment is home to unique wildlife such as the spectacled bear, the iconic Cock-of-the-Rock (Peru’s national bird), and a wide variety of orchids, bromeliads, and tropical ferns.

As we travel deeper into this lush rainforest, there are excellent opportunities for birdwatching and nature observation in Manu’s cloud forest, surrounded by misty mountains and dense vegetation.

By late afternoon, we arrive at San Pedro de Orquídeas Lodge, located in a peaceful natural setting. Here you will enjoy dinner and your first night of accommodation, surrounded by the sounds of the Andean cloud forest, preparing for the Amazon adventure ahead.

Day 2 : Cloud Forest – Erika Lodge (400m.s.n.m.)

We start the day very early with a guided excursion in search of the Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, famous for its intense orange color and unique courtship dance. This is one of the best cloud forest Peru wildlife experiences, offering excellent chances for birdwatching in its natural habitat.

After breakfast, we continue our journey descending into the Amazon transition zone, passing through the small jungle town of Pilcopata. From here, we proceed to Atalaya Port, located on the banks of the Madre de Dios River at around 700 m.a.s.l.

At Atalaya, we board a motorized boat and begin navigating into the Amazon rainforest toward the Erika Private Reserve. During the river journey, we enjoy excellent opportunities for Amazon rainforest Peru wildlife observation, where it is possible to see birds such as herons, vultures, cormorants, and other species along the riverbanks.

Upon arrival at Erika Lodge (400 m.a.s.l.), we explore jungle trails located in the transition zone between cloud forest and lowland Amazon rainforest. Your expert guide will explain the incredible biodiversity of the area, including tropical plants, medicinal species, insects, and wildlife typical of the Manu ecosystem.

In the afternoon or evening, there is an optional night walk in the rainforest, where we search for amphibians, insects, frogs, and nocturnal creatures that become active after sunset, offering a completely different perspective of the jungle.

We spend the night at Erika Lodge, surrounded by the natural sounds of the Amazon rainforest.

As an optional activity, guests can enjoy 90 minutes of rafting (Class I–II) in Pilcopata on the Koñeq or Madre de Dios River, combining adventure with scenic landscapes and a refreshing swim in natural waters.

Day 3: Erika Lodge

We begin the day with a guided morning walk around Erika Lodge, where your naturalist guide will explain the rich biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest, including the different species of flora and fauna that thrive in this transition zone between cloud forest and lowland jungle. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about medicinal plants, tropical trees, and the complex ecosystem of the Manu National Park region.

Afterwards, we board our boat and cross the river before continuing along a forest trail for approximately 30 minutes. Along the way, we observe the lush vegetation of the rainforest, including sensitive plants, heliconias, fruit trees, and other tropical species typical of the Amazon rainforest Peru ecosystem.

We continue walking until we reach Lake Machuwasi, a peaceful oxbow lake surrounded by pristine jungle. Here we explore by traditional raft, offering excellent chances for wildlife observation in Manu, including the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin bird, as well as caimans, monkeys, and capybaras depending on luck and conditions.

After returning to the lodge, there is time to relax and enjoy the natural surroundings of the Amazon jungle.

In the evening, we take part in a guided night walk around Erika Lodge, where we explore the rainforest after dark in search of insects, frogs, tarantulas, and other nocturnal species that reveal a completely different side of the jungle ecosystem.

As an optional activity, guests may also enjoy the Canopy Zip Line experience, gliding between platforms high above the Amazon forest using a secure harness system. The adventure includes multiple cables and finishes with a 15-meter rappel descent back to the jungle floor, offering an exciting aerial view of the rainforest canopy.

Day 4 : Erika Lodge – Cusco

Very early in the morning, we board our boat and navigate along the river to visit a parrot clay lick (collpa), one of the most impressive natural spectacles of the Amazon rainforest. Here, different species such as the blue-headed parrot, white-eyed parakeet, and possibly the maracana macaw, gather to feed on mineral-rich clay that helps them balance their diet and digestion. This is an excellent opportunity for Amazon rainforest Peru wildlife observation, especially for birdwatching enthusiasts.

After this early activity, we return to Erika Lodge for breakfast. Once finished, we pack our belongings and begin the return journey by boat to Atalaya Port, enjoying the last views of the Amazon jungle transition zone within Manu National Park.

At Atalaya, our private transport will be waiting to continue the drive back to Cusco. The route passes once again through the cloud forest and Andean landscapes, offering a final perspective of the incredible biodiversity experienced during the expedition.

Lunch is provided en route, and we arrive in Cusco in the early evening.
