We begin the day very early with a guided excursion in search of the Cock-of-the-Rock (Rupicola peruviana), Peru’s national bird. This is one of the most spectacular birdwatching experiences in the cloud forest of Manu National Park, where males gather in groups to perform their famous courtship dance. Their bright reddish-orange plumage and crest displays create an unforgettable natural show, while females observe and select the strongest mates.

After breakfast, we continue our journey descending through the Amazon cloud forest Peru ecosystem, traveling along a scenic road surrounded by waterfalls, canyons, and dense vegetation. We pass through the small jungle town of Pilcopata before arriving at Atalaya Port, located on the banks of the Alto Madre de Dios River.

Here we enjoy lunch before boarding a covered motorized boat to begin our navigation into the Amazon rainforest. We travel for approximately 40 minutes downstream, entering the transition zone of the Manu Biosphere Reserve cultural area, where the Andes gradually transform into the Amazon basin.

Upon arrival at the Erika Private Reserve, we explore the surrounding jungle trails in one of the most biodiverse sections of the Manu jungle expedition route. This area is a perfect introduction to the lowland rainforest, where your naturalist guide will explain the rich variety of flora and fauna found in this ecosystem.

In the afternoon, you will have time to relax and immerse yourself in the sounds of the Amazon jungle.

We spend the night at Erika Lodge, a comfortable rustic eco-lodge surrounded by pristine rainforest.

After breakfast at Erika Lodge, we continue our Manu 8 days jungle adventure by boarding a motorized canoe and navigating downstream along the Alto Madre de Dios River, entering deeper into the Amazon rainforest of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.

During this scenic river journey, we explore one of the richest areas for Amazon rainforest Peru wildlife observation, where the riverbanks and forest edges offer excellent opportunities to spot a wide variety of bird species. Among the most commonly seen are the black skimmer, pied lapwing, capped heron, jabiru stork, as well as several species of kingfishers, swallows, and flycatchers.

As we continue, the landscape becomes more remote and pristine until we reach Boca Manu Village, located near the confluence of the Manu and Madre de Dios rivers. This small jungle settlement is an important stop within the Manu National Park expedition route, where travelers can take a short break and, if needed, purchase fresh supplies or cold drinks before continuing deeper into the Amazon.

From Boca Manu, we proceed by canoe toward our next lodge, enjoying more opportunities for birdwatching and rainforest scenery in the Manu jungle along the way.

By late afternoon, we arrive at our lodge near Boca Manu, where we settle in and relax in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

In the evening, there is an optional night walk experience, where we explore the surrounding jungle in search of nocturnal wildlife such as insects, frogs, and other Amazon species active after dark.

We spend the night at the lodge surrounded by the sounds of the deep rainforest.

Very early in the morning, after a short 10-minute boat ride, we arrive at a parrot clay lick (collpa) located along the riverbank. This is one of the most impressive Amazon rainforest Peru wildlife spectacles, where several species of parrots gather to feed on mineral-rich clay essential for their diet. Here we may observe the blue-headed parrot, white-eyed parakeet, dusky-headed parrot, chestnut-fronted macaw, and other species arriving in large groups, creating a vibrant natural display.

After this activity, we return to have an early breakfast and complete registration at the Limonal Park Ranger Station, an official checkpoint of Manu National Park. From here, we continue our journey by boat upstream along the Manu River, entering deeper into the untouched heart of the Amazon rainforest.

This navigation of approximately four hours takes us further into one of the most pristine areas of the Manu Biosphere Reserve expedition route, where all signs of human presence gradually disappear and the wilderness becomes completely dominant.

Along the way, we continue to enjoy excellent opportunities for wildlife observation in Manu National Park, with frequent sightings of macaws, herons, kingfishers, and cormorants. With some luck, we may also observe capybaras, caimans, monkeys, and other Amazon wildlife resting along the riverbanks or moving through the forest canopy.

By early afternoon, we arrive at Lake Salvador, our base safari campsite located in the deep jungle. The camp is equipped with basic facilities including a dining area, toilets, showers, solar-powered electricity, and radio communication, offering a comfortable stay in a remote environment.

After lunch at the campsite, we take a guided jungle walk through the surrounding rainforest. While midday is not the most active time for wildlife, this excursion focuses on understanding the structure and ecology of the Amazon rainforest ecosystem, including plants, forest layers, and biodiversity patterns.

We then return to the campsite to relax and prepare for the next day’s exploration.

We wake up very early in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, as the jungle comes alive with the powerful calls of the Red Howler Monkey (Alouatta seniculus), marking its territory across the forest. This early morning atmosphere is ideal for a Manu National Park wildlife experience, when animals are most active in search of food and movement is easier to detect in the cool temperature.

Before breakfast, we take a guided morning walk around Lake Salvador, one of the best opportunities for Amazon rainforest Peru wildlife observation, where we may encounter a variety of birds and mammals in their natural habitat.

After breakfast, we explore Lake Salvador by catamaran, moving quietly across the water to minimize disturbance. This is an excellent setting for observing monkeys, caimans, exotic birds, and with luck, the endangered Giant River Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis). This species can sometimes be seen swimming, fishing, playing, or feeding along the lake’s edges.

In the afternoon, after lunch, we cross the river and continue along a jungle trail to another oxbow lake known as Otorongo Lake, located within one of the most pristine rainforest areas of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.

This ancient forest, estimated to be 200–300 years old, is characterized by massive Ceiba trees, strangler figs, and untouched primary rainforest, making it one of the richest habitats for Manu jungle expedition wildlife.

Here we may encounter species such as saddleback tamarins, squirrel monkeys, spider monkeys, brown capuchins, as well as collared and white-lipped peccaries moving through the forest.

At Otorongo Lake, we climb a 15-meter observation tower, strategically located above the canopy. From the top, we enjoy panoramic views of the lake and surrounding jungle while increasing our chances of spotting wildlife, including birds and possibly Giant Otters.

In the late afternoon, we return to Lake Salvador. At night, we go out on a guided catamaran excursion using flashlights to observe black caimans emerging from the water as they begin hunting after dark—an unforgettable Amazon rainforest night wildlife experience in Peru.

We return to the safari campsite for overnight stay.

This is a great moment to absorb the sounds of the jungle and observe wildlife activity at sunrise in its most natural state.

After breakfast, we pack our belongings and begin a slow downstream navigation along the Manu River, continuing our Amazon rainforest Peru expedition deeper toward more accessible zones of the reserve.

During the boat journey, we enjoy one last opportunity for wildlife observation in Manu, with chances to see birds, monkeys, and other species along the riverbanks as we gradually leave the most remote area of the expedition.

We arrive at Boca Manu Village, located near the confluence of the Manu River and the Alto Madre de Dios River. This small Amazon settlement marks an important point in the Manu jungle expedition route, where we transition from deep rainforest back toward lower jungle zones.

From here, we continue downstream along the Madre de Dios River, enjoying the final stretch of navigation through the Amazon landscape until we reach Boca Lodge, where we will spend the night surrounded by jungle sounds.

In the evening, there is an optional night walk in the rainforest, where we explore the surroundings in search of nocturnal wildlife such as American bullfrogs, horned frogs, tree frogs, and a wide variety of colorful insects, offering a completely different perspective of the Amazon ecosystem.

We overnight at Boca Lodge, immersed in the magic of the rainforest.

After breakfast, we begin our journey upstream along the Alto Madre de Dios River, continuing our Amazon rainforest Peru expedition back through the transition zones of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.

During the navigation, we enjoy a final opportunity for wildlife observation in Manu National Park, with chances to see birds along the riverbanks, lush vegetation, and the ever-changing scenery of the Amazon jungle as we gradually return toward the cloud forest region.

By mid-morning or early afternoon, we arrive at Erika Lodge, located within the rich biodiversity corridor of Manu National Park. This comfortable eco-lodge offers the perfect setting to relax after several days deep in the rainforest.

The afternoon is free to rest, enjoy the surroundings, and reflect on the incredible journey through the Manu jungle expedition route, from deep Amazon basin back toward the cloud forest transition zone.

In the evening, we enjoy our final night in the jungle, surrounded by the sounds of the rainforest—an unforgettable end to your Manu 8 days adventure.

We wake up very early in the morning and begin our final journey by boat along the Alto Madre de Dios River, heading to Atalaya Port. This last navigation offers a final chance to enjoy the sounds and scenery of the Amazon rainforest during your Manu National Park 8 days expedition.

Upon arrival at Atalaya, our vehicle will be waiting to continue the overland journey back to Cusco. We drive once again through the Amazon cloud forest, Andean valleys, and high mountain landscapes, retracing the incredible ecological transition experienced during the trip.

Arrival in Cusco is expected late in the evening, marking the end of this unforgettable Amazon rainforest Peru adventure.
