Itinerary

Day 1: Quito (2800 m) - José Ribas mountain hut (4862 m)

Start Time: 11:30 AM Elevation: 4,862 m / 15,951 ft. Depart from Quito (2,800 m) and travel south along the famous Avenue of the Volcanoes, one of the most scenic routes in the Ecuadorian Andes, toward the village of El Chaupi. Upon arrival, climbers organize and prepare all necessary gear for the Cotopaxi glacier climbing expedition.

After lunch, continue toward Cotopaxi National Park, a world-renowned destination for high-altitude mountaineering in Ecuador. Drive to the parking area at 4,500 m and begin a 1-hour acclimatization hike in volcanic terrain to the José Rivas Refuge (4,862 m), the main base camp for the Cotopaxi summit climb.

The afternoon is dedicated to rest, hydration, and preparation for the midnight ascent of Cotopaxi Volcano (5,897 m), one of the highest active volcanoes in the world.

Day 2: José Ribas mountain hut (4862 m) - Summit Cotopaxi (5897 m) – Quito (2800 m)

Start Time: 12:00 AM Elevation: 5,897 m / 19,347 ft. Midnight wake-up at the José Rivas Refuge, followed by a light breakfast and final preparation for the Cotopaxi glacier climbing expedition. Around 01:00 AM, begin the ascent toward the summit of Cotopaxi Volcano (5,897 m), one of the highest active volcanoes in the world and a classic high-altitude mountaineering climb in Ecuador.

At the entrance of the glacier, the certified mountain guide will provide instructions on the proper use of crampons, ice axe, rope systems, and glacier climbing techniques, ensuring a safe ascent on snow and ice terrain.

The climb to the summit takes approximately 6–8 hours, crossing spectacular glacier landscapes in the Ecuadorian Andes. Upon reaching the summit crater, enjoy panoramic sunrise views and time for photographs at nearly 6,000 meters above sea level.

After the summit experience, descend back to the refuge in approximately 2–3 hours. Following a full breakfast and short rest, continue down to the parking area, where private transportation will be waiting for the return drive to Quito (2,800 m).
