The high peak of North Vallunaraju (5,686 m) is close enough to Huaraz to make a summit ascent in two days via a moderate climb. If you make your way to this summit, you can see other peaks in the northern part of the Cordillera Blanca, including Oxshapalca (5,881 m) and Ranrapalca (6,262 m).

Day 1: Base Camp Preparation and Acclimatization
Morning: Depart from Huaraz and drive to the trailhead, providing stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys.
Begin the trek to the base camp, gradually ascending through alpine meadows and rocky terrain.
Arrive at the base camp, set against the backdrop of Nevado Vallunaraju, and acclimatize to the high-altitude environment.
Receive a comprehensive briefing from the expedition guide, covering the route, safety protocols, and equipment usage.

Afternoon:Engage in an acclimatization hike around the base camp, allowing climbers to adjust to the altitude and terrain.
Finalize preparations for the summit attempt, ensuring all climbing equipment is in optimal condition.
Enjoy a hearty dinner and rest in preparation for the early morning ascent.

Day 2: Summit Attempt and Descent
Night: Wake up in the early hours to begin the summit attempt, equipped with headlamps and cold-weather gear.
Start the climb, navigating through glacial terrain, snowfields, and steep slopes under the guidance of experienced guides.

Morning: Ascend towards the summit of Nevado Vallunaraju, experiencing the awe-inspiring beauty of the Cordillera Blanca bathed in the early morning light.
Reach the summit and savor panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Huascaran and Chopicalqui.
Capture memorable photographs to commemorate the achievement.

Afternoon: Begin the descent back to the base camp, carefully navigating the challenging terrain.
Break down the camp and descend further to the trailhead.
Return to Huaraz, reminiscing about the exhilarating climb and the stunning vistas witnessed.

 

Itinerary

Day 1: Huaraz - Quebrada Llaca Valley; hike to Moraine Camp (4900 m)

Leave from Huaraz in private transport to the Llaca Valley (3850 m). From here we begin our ascent on foot to Moraine Camp, spending about two hours on the trail. This climb is relatively long and steep; we proceed very slowly so we don’t get too tired and can adjust to the altitude before our summit day tomorrow. Overnight Camp.

Day 2: Moraine Camp - Nevado Vallunaraju Summit (5686 m) - Moraine Camp - Transfer to Huaraz

Early in the morning around 4:00 am we start a short climb over the rocks for about 25 minutes to get to the beginning of the glacier. We put on our climbing gear and climb around 4 hours up. A steady and not steep on good snow slopes towards the summit (5686m). The last 60m is steeper and will feel exposed – the guide will help you with this. After enjoying the views and taking pictures, we go back down to the Moraine Camp (4760m) for about 2 hours. Then we return back to the road in the Llaca Valley and drive to Huaraz.
