Highlights

This lagoon is located about 20 km east of Huaraz on the road to Llupa and Pitec. It is one of the most beautiful and most visited lakes in this area. Its access, from Pitec, requires a steep hike that takes between 2 to 3 hours (3.5km) to the lagoon where you can appreciate (1 hour) the turquoise water lagoon with a breathtaking beauty.

The hike to Laguna Churup (4450 masl) is a very popular full day in the Cordillera Blanca and is located very close to Huaraz, but it is not as easy as it looks, so it is best to leave early (approx 7am), to walk at a leisurely pace and be able to rest when needed.

Another interesting option is to camp next to the lagoon, as long as you have the time and the necessary equipment.

Itinerary

Day 1: Trekking Pitec (3850 m)- Laguna Churup (4450 m)

The trail to Laguna Churup is one of the classic hikes of the Cordillera Blanca, challenging but a great acclimatization route. We drive to the village of Llupa, and from there begin our hike on an ancient Inca trail to Laguna (Lake) Churup. The trail gets narrow and steep, including a small section with fixed ropes. It‘s one of the most beautiful places in this varied mountain region. Churup Peak rises above the lake, a wild rocky mountain with glaciers and cliffs 5,400 meters above sea level. Here we can continue climbing and do a loop to the Churup summit trail before returning to the trailhead and back to Huaraz for the night.
