The rainbow mountain is one of the best hikes you have in Cordillera Vilcanota in the way, you can enjoy the magnificent views of the mountains and the wild animals and Alpacas.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Tinque – Upis.

Your guide will meet you in Cusco at 6am. in the morning and take you via private transportation to the starting point of our trek at Tinki – Upis where we meet with our porter, horse and we load up your gear into the pack horses.

We will hike for 3 hours aprox.  until our campsite Upis where you will enjoy  lunch, after have a break in this campside Upis. Here you will have the opportunity to take a soak in the hot springs, while enjoying coca tea, and relaxing your muscles until dinner.

Ausangate 5 Day Trek, Day 1 Details

  • Distance: 9.65km/ 6 miles
  • Elevation: 4100m/ 13,450ft
  • Hiking time: 5 to 6  hours
  • Meals: breakfast, lunch & dinner
  • Accommodations: camping

Day 2: Upis – Chillca.

we wake up early at 5am. with a hot Coca tea or coffee brought to your tent and you will fuel up with a big breakfast for the day,in the morning starts with a hike up Arapa pass (4,958m/16266ft) before we descend a bit to our lunch spot near Lake Puma Cocha- a deep blue lake and a perfect stop for a break.

Along the way, you will see local herders and llamas, Ausangate Mountain to your left, and you will have your expert guide explaining the history of the locals and talking about the landscape along the way.

After lunch, we continue uphill for our second pass, Pucacocha (5000m/16404ft) where if you are lucky you may see condors and vicuñas. We descend to our campsite of Chillca where you will be surrounded by high mountains and incredible hanging glaciers, where you can watch for the glacier crashing into the lake below! As always, camp will be set up for you to change and rest your weary legs while dinner is being prepared.

5-Day Ausangate Trek, Day 2 Details

Day 3: Chillca Ananta - Rainbow Mountain (5200m)- Lake Ausangate

This day we starts the trek early at 4.00am aprox. We have the Arapa pass (5051m/16571ft), a very colorful mountain but only a precursor of what is to come. After crossing the pass you enter into the Red Mountain Valley, a wildly desert landscape with vibrant colors all around, and llamas roaming the ground below.

When you approach the top of the pass, you will see the beautiful Rainbow Mountain in the distance, but you are not quite there! From here, you descend to circle lake and continue walking a Peruvian flat until we are presented with one final climb to the Rainbow Mountain.

Soak in the sights and enjoy what you have worked so hard to reach.  We will enjoy lunch in the surrounding area, and head back down the valley to make our way to the stunning Lake Ausangate where camp will be set up and waiting for you to take a rest.

Day 4: Lake Ausangate- Palomani Pass – Pachaspata

After our delicious breakfast, we begin hiking up to the highest point of the Ausangate trail of our trip at 5200m. called Palomani Pass. Therefore, you are going to feel like you are in heaven, higher than all the other hikes in all region Cusco.

You will appreciate the great canyons and valleys of the Andes, Once you get the summit, you will be right at the bottom of the Ausangate Mountain which is considered to be the protector by the locals.

Along the way, we will appreciate different glacier peaks, bubbling streams, rivers, red lakes, chinchillas, alpacas, local herders, and llamas. We will then walk up and down and arrive at our lunch spot called Huchuy Phinaya called. After our delicious lunch, we hike another 3 hour aprox. to our campsite called Pachaspata.

Ausangate 5 Day Trek, Day 4 Details

Day 5: Pachaspata – Pacchanta - Cusco

After with two hight pass we had, this day we wake up at 6am with a hot mug of tea or coffee tea brought to your tent at 7am will have a breakfast.
I the way we will have nice view of the mountain and 5 Lagoons.

Where we have breck for take photos. then when we arrive to Pacchanta we have lunch this day we will say good bye our cook, porters then back to cusco.

Recommendations:

  • The main recommendation is not to go on your own to make adventure tourism in this snowy mountain, always hire a tour operator as they will take care of the details of transportation, food, professional guide and above all your safety at all times.
  • Take Soroche Pills (Soroche Pills) for altitude sickness or otherwise drink plenty of coca leaves tea.
  • Comfortable and warm clothes, trekking pants, waterproof jacket, rain poncho and comfortable shoes.
  • Apply sun block, at least every two hours. Carry extra money in soles for certain expenses during the route.
  • Do not leave your garbage in the place, take care of the environment.
  • But this mountain is one of the most beautiful and representative of the Cusco Andes. The landscapes it offers and the experience that the traveler lives in Ausangate are priceless. It is only 100 kilometers southeast of Cusco.
  • Climate in the Ausangate snow-capped peak
  • The climate is generally cold in the area, although at night temperatures drop to below 5°C (41°F).
  • On the other hand, during the day it can be up to 20°C (68°F). In addition, it has cold winds during parts of the day but the weather is usually unstable as there can be precipitation and snowfall at any time.

  • Large plastic bags will be provided at the office — Please ask for them.
  • Sleeping bag: It has to be at least -15ºC – This can be rented from us.
